PART 4 STUDIO WORK – post 5
Perhaps it’s a constant with artists to wonder if their work is actually saying what they want to say! This may be particularly so if you want the work to raise awareness of current world issues. This question led me to take part in a brief series of tutorials led by Garry Clarkson, OCA tutor, Photography, Creative Arts, Film and Moving Image. Although I wasn’t able to fully engage with the course for various reasons, it did stimulate new ideas about how to present my painting in different ways. The new technology was daunting but I managed to produce through iMovie a small ‘art movie’ exhibiting the work of the painting in the last post with a brief message. I wasn’t able technically to do the ‘fading in and out’ of text but it is a start. If time allows I hope to continue this media experimentation…
Highlighting the message is one element of the video. But there is another significant element! Because my work encourages a listening process, it is important to connect with the hidden places in the painting and here I’ve seen the value of cropping.
The cropping process places a sharp focus on detail, allowing the viewer a much deeper connection with the hidden world of nature, its spaces between leaves and flowers, the dark mystery which is not usually obvious. I’ve included a photo of one such hidden space in the garden in the video. Following that photo are the cropped images from the painting showing the layers and depth of the image, emphasising the complexity of the painting as is the case with nature. My hope is that the painting itself will continually reveal itself to the viewer and that hidden spaces , shapes and colours will show new worlds.
