PART 3

SPACE, AESTHETICS AND REALISATION post 4

EXHIBITION PLANNING

As I wrote in post 3, my focus for the exhibition has shifted from the garden space to a gallery space for the reasons given. I have now booked the Robert Phillips gallery at The Riverhouse Barn in Walton on Thames, Surrey for Easter 2021, to be confirmed.

Along with this I am continuing to push ahead with the other elements of the initial planning list, because in these very uncertain times I have no idea what next Easter will look like in terms of gallery visits.

  • Website and blog

I am in the process of developing my own website which will incorporate a blog. I feel as though this is the next step in weaning the student off the learning log into the world of personal websites.

  • Artist’s books.

I am starting a collaboration with Janina Maher, a maker of books. I’ve ordered two different formats of books and intend to continue exploring sound with original artwork. She is involved in book fairs online and so my work may appear, exhibiting the collaboration. I am planning to use the book format for the written word which is an integral part of my work process as well as the expression of immediate responses to sound. The concertina format may also be an appropriate format for responding to music from The Ethernet orchestra and perhaps could incorporate a cd of the music.

  • Art programme for children

The art programme for children, ‘Are you Listening’, encouraging connection with the natural world through listening, is developing and I’ve had an encouraging response from ‘Access Art’ which is a charity organised to provide art material for children. I’m in the process of arranging a Zoom call with them in November to see how to progress this. It is early days for this connection but it does seem to be the right kind of outlet for my programme, involving children and anyone, in the experience of listening to nature. Here are images of the first few pages, about a quarter of the programme so far…

  • Collaboration with The Ethernet orchestra continues to be a possibility. I’ve been contacted by the director of the orchestra giving information on how a real time performance could happen which I will be looking at. There is no urgency about this…very exciting!

All of these elements continue to explore the essential focus of my work, SOUND. They may all come to fruition or not; at this stage, I don’t know. Whether or not, they are each developing my work in different ways and essentially feed into the paintings. For example, in writing the art programme I am having to do some detailed thinking about how I listen to nature. Listening has become so much a part of my creative thinking for many years now, it is fascinating to be thinking about conveying that aspect of communication to others.
