PART 3 ASSIGNMENT self assessment

PART 3 ASSIGNMENT

SELF ASSESSMENT

Significant progress has been made in Part 3 with both my painting and with planning for an Easter exhibition. All details are posted here on the learning log…

To summarise –

  • Although the space of the exhibition has now changed from the garden to a gallery space, the theme of the work will remain the same as before – sound and the natural world. This combines the two elements of my work which have been consistent over several years. I am satisfied with this as it reflects a fundamental thread running through all that I do which is that life is about continual growth and newness. I expect the exhibition to reflect this in its exploration of the sonic landscape.
  • Paintings for the exhibition     I am seeing a much more confident approach to my painting developing. I now understand my process much more and with this understanding I am able to work through ideas, listen carefully to the painting itself and be confident that the image will reveal itself. I also am getting a greater understanding of where the written word fits. My written word is a crucial part of the process of realising the final image and yet I’m not happy that text appears on the images. Realising that they are part of the process, I now begin by writing the poem on the canvas/paper surface before I begin to paint and incorporating text as the ideas evolve. The paint obviously obliterates the writing but this doesn’t matter. It is not necessary for the poem to be seen, in fact I feel that it doesn’t allow the viewer his/ her own space to discover the painting if the poem is obvious.
  • As I’ve posted, a booking has now been confirmed for a week’s exhibition at Easter 2021 at The Riverhouse Barn, Walton on Thames, Surrey.
  • My website is underway and this will include a blog.
  • I am in collaboration with a maker of books. This strand of the work gives me the space to develop, experiment, express ideas with the written work as preparation for final paintings. However they do not take the place of the sketchbook. I envisage that I will work on the book as an object, exploring ideas, thoughts alongside the written word and these may form part of the exhibition.
  • Interest is being expressed with my art programme for children, ‘Are you listening’ by AccessArt
  • The Ethernet orchestra remains interested in a collaboration of performance and real time music.

All of these different strands may appear disparate at this stage but I feel that they are the right way to proceed considering the very uncertain atmosphere  that remains in regard to staging a physical exhibition.
